A Deeper Look Inside...Jason Jaramillo

JJ.jpg
An offseason acquisition, nobody could imagine where Jason Jaramillo would be today. In an exchange for catchers the Pirates shipped Ronny Paulino to Philadelphia for JJ. Not really a questionable move, everybody assumed both players were of equal talent and equal potential. Who knew a change of scenery would make such an impact in such a little time. Nobody could have imagined Jason Jaramillo would be the most important signing of the offseason.

Jaramillo has always been a wildcard in his younger days. As the highest rated catcher in high school coming out of Racine, Wis, Jaramillo took a scholarship to play across the country at Oklahoma State. JJ led the Cowboys to a BIG 12 Title and an appearance in the College World Series.

jj35.jpgIf you've ever seen the movie "Summer Catch" with Jessica Biel and Freddy Prince Jr., Jason was Prince Jr.'s character of Ryan Dunne.

summercatchdvdcover.jpg
A striking resemblance don't ya think? Jaramillo played in the Cape Cod Summer League in 2004. The movie was based off the league.

With his time in the Phillies minor league system, Jaramillo was a work horse. He led the International League in games. His defensive stats are also impressive as he led the league in putouts and assists. Jaramillo has a strong arm and gives pitcher's great control of the game. He settles down pitcher's and has a way of communicating with battery mates that makes them comfortable.

At the plate, Jaramillo has a long track record of success. Always batting in the .290s Jaramillo has teh ability to get on base. While he lacks the power of becoming a long ball threat, JJ is the ideal National League catcher.

For what Jason has been able to do since Ryan Doumit landed on the DL is remarkable. In nine starts for the Buccos this year, he has hit safely in 7 of them. For a young guy making his major league debut, that is a phenomenal way to start your big league career. Jaramillo is currently batting .345 and has been hot in his time in the lineup. His ability to make an impact in dire situations.

Wells Watch-Vol. 3

The Nationals keep plundering adn their bullpen is a major reason for the shortcomings.

However, last night was a different story.

Fromer Bucco Julian Tavarez set out for the save an nailed it. The Nats picked up their 5th win of the season winning 4-1 in Philly. Another former Bucco came in the game and held it for Washington.

kipper.jpg

You guessed it, it was the Mad Kipper. Yeah, I suppose it doesn't have the same ring as the Mad Capper, but the way Wells has been throwing I think worthy comparrisons can be drawn between the two.

In another inning of work on Wednesday Wells walked to Phillie batters but got out of a jam by retiring each batter and not giving up a a hit. Look at the determinination in those eyes. With Wells on the mound and you're an opposing batter, God help you. WIth something to prove and gas still running in his tank, Kippy has been masterful for the Nats depleted bullpen. If he keep doing what he's doing a call to the rotation is bound to happen sooner or later. Kip has 2 holds on the year, including one from last night. His 1.69 era is 2nd on the team behind yet another former Bucco, Joe Beimel.

The Nats are just becoming a team of Pirate castoffs. WIth Tavarez, Beimel and Wells in the pen its no wonder why their pitching is underachieveing. The trio never quite lived up to expectations in the Burgh and now they're giving fans in the Nations Capital something to moan about. Who knows, maybe they'll turn things around. There is no where to go but up.

Miller Low Life

Meet Yovani Gallardo

fantasy_g_gallardo_580.jpg The ace pitcher of the Milwaukee Brewers. Gallardo has been a key component of the Milwaukee pitching staff for the last two years. He has been even more of a cornerstone now that Ben Sheets and CC Sabathia are no longer with the club. In Wednesday's game Gallardo was just nasty. Picking up his third win of the year he went 8 full innings only giving up two hits to the Bucs.

On the other hand Ian Snell to the mound for Pittsburgh. 7 full innings, 5 hits and one earned run was Snell's stat line for the night. Any pitcher would take those numbers, especially Snell. The one thing that was dicouraging for Snell was how the one run was given up.

Meet Yovani Gallardo

yovani.jpg  Yes this is the same Yovani. The same Yovani Brewers fans all know and love, Pirates fans, not so much. Not only did he embarass Bucco batters with his slew of pitches, he also embarasses Ian Snell. Gallardo jacked a 7th inning dinger over the left field fence. Not only did the pitcher belt the homerun, he also had the only RBI of the game. Thats right folks the Pirates lost this one 1-0. Hard to swallow indeed.

Thumbnail image for ian.jpg

Don't worry Ian, it happens to the best of us.

It just stinks that this could have been a great confidence booster to not only Ian, but the rest of the club. We were swept by the Brew Crew, the first occurance that we've had to suffer through all year. The losing streak alos continued. The Pirates have now lost 18th straight against the Brewers. No doubt about it they are a good team. Their offense is stellar and their pitching is overachieveing. Right now both the Bucs and Brew Crew stand at 11-10 on the year, 2nd place in the NL Central.

Pittsburgh finished their road trip 2-4. Not too bad considering it faced decent competition and historically the team lays an egg on roadstands early in the year. Returning to PNC Park this weekend, the Pirates hope to right their ship. With another NL Central opponent, the Reds, Pittsburgh will have the opportunity to catch up with the Cardinals for the Central lead.

Featured Blog

Clemente_3000_Hit.jpgJust as the great Roberto Clemente did on the night of his 3,000 hit to the fans of Pittsburgh, I do the same to all of you. I tip my cap to my readers, commenters and the entire blogosphere community. It was a great honor to log onto the main page and see myself as the Featured Blog. It's a cool feeling and I appreciate the recognition.

What can I say I have a lot of fun blogging. To follow my team is one thing but to put it in words and share it with baseball fans far and wide is a great experience. Every day I'm on here updating my own page while reading others. Its honestly where I come first when I am hungry for some MLB news. There's nothing greater than the voice of the fans. From my time blogging on here I've seen three Pirate blogs as the Featured Blog. Kind of a testament to our loyalty and dedication dont ya think.

As a journalism major this is something I want to be doing the rest of my life. Covering a sports team gives me a rush like I actually am part of the team. Doing so with the Pirates here and with the WVU baseball team is great experience and I love every minute of it. As a matter of fact I'm heading out the door very soon, scorebook and tape recorder in hand, for the West Virginia-Morehead State baseball game. Its a cloudy night here in Morgantown and the graying skies look ominous. I'm hoping they get this game in. It is a much needed break from the hardships of studying for finals. When I get back from the game I'll write my postgame wrapups and tune into FSN Pittsburgh hopefully to find my Buccos beating the Brewers. Untill then thanks again mlblogs.com! LETS GO BUCS and LETS GOOOOOOO MOUNTAINEERS

The Tale of the Pirate's Pen

Last night's loss was tough to swallow. It was a comeback wasted after Milwaukee destroyed the Buc's bullpen torching the staff for 5 runs. Jeff Karstens began the game and lobbed 3 homerun balls to Ryan Braun, Rickie Weeks and Mike Cameron respectively. Jesse Chavez first relieved Karstens in the 6th and did a quality job. Chavez looked demanding and controlling getting batts to pop up. At the beginning of the year I questioned the move to make him a go-to-guy out of the pen, but he has since proved me wrong. Tyler Yates on the other hand has proved me right. I've never been a fan of the guy and he has given me no real reason to support him.

Yates has a record of 0- on the young season, the loss coming in last night's game, and a dismal era of 9.95. In only 6.1 innings pitched he has walked 4 batters, given up 7 earned runs and has successfully made me cringe and sweat upon his appearances on the mound.

John Grabow was a surprise failure in yesterday's game. Grabow was able to just retire one batter as he was just all over the place walking 2 batters and earning two runs.

The only key reliever was Evan Meek, throwing a full inning Meek struck out two batters. Meek deserves more of a tip of the cap from our organization. After beginning the year in Indy Meek has stepped in and done an unfathomable good job. Not allowing a run in two appearances and giving me confidence whenever he steps on the mound. It would pay great dividends to keep him up here, even when Craig Hansen returns from the DL. Yates should be the one sent down.

The bullpen of the Nationals has also been abysmal. Thats right it's time for another installment of WELL'S WATCH.

kip.jpg

It was a tight game between the Nats and Philies last night, a 13-11 slugfest that was ultimately won by the Phils. With the score close and the Nats within striking distance Kipper was called on to keep Philly in check. Which he did masterfully. Wells went one strong inning and struck out two batters.

So far on the year Kip has appeared in four games and has only suffered one earned run. Three strikeouts in only 4 innings pitched, two hits in only four innings pitched and no homeruns in only 4 innings pitched. Hey in my book, thats solid. He's been solid without a doubt and looks like he's really coming around. The bullpen is definately the spot for him. Looks like we should have utilized him out of the pen, instead of throwing him in the starting role like a chicken with his head cut off.

Bad News Brew Crew

miller park.jpg
As nice as Miller Park in Milwaukee, Wisconsin may look, don't be fooled. It is a death trap for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Make no doubt about it, I think it is a beautiful stadium. As much as I dislike retractable roofs, Miller Park makes me rethink that harsh assumption.

Last season the Bucs were 0-6 in the city of Sausages. For those playing at home, thats winless. Everyone remembers the walk-off grand slam by this guy...

braunx.jpg RYAN BRAUN. The date was September 25, 2008. WIth the Brewers within striking distance of a playoff spot, which they captured, a pivital games was played against the Pirates. In dramatic fashion Braun belted a pitch thrown by Jesse Chavez into the upper deck in Miller Park's right field. The 450-foot blast gave the Brewers momentum into the postseason.

Hopefully, this year will be a different story. Reliever Jesse Chavez is performing well out of the Pirate pen and hopes to leave last year's granny in the past. Chavez has an era of just over one and in eight innings pitched he has struck out four batters.

The pitching staff has a whole has been monumental for the Bucs. Jeff Karstens takes the hill in game one on Monday. He has an era of 3.60, while Joe Kerrigan and John Russel have followed Karstens pitch count closely they will need him to go deep into games to remain effective.

With the promotion of Evan Meek to replace the injured Craig Hansen the bullpen will also have to step up to keep the Bucs in games.

The Pitt Peas travels to the Land of Rock 'n Roll

Just when you thought the Peas was just a Pittsburgh deal...

indians game 017.JPG

A beautiful Saturday afternoon, but just one thing was missing. A baseball game. While the roomates along with a  group of West Virginia buds and myself played wiffle ball all day Friday, something just didn't seem right. Since the Pirates weren't in town, a three hour trek to the Buckeye State took place.

indians game 007.JPGMy buddy Jared has been chomping at the bit to make a game at The Prog this year. While he is a supporter of my Pirates, his role as Indians correspondent is much more appreciated.

It was a beautiful night in C-Land as we entered the outfield gates. Its much more spacious and alive than the outfield at PNC Park. The opening out to the wide green grass of the field is nearly breathtaking, at the very least its a cool site. The most unique thing was the photographer that approached us and asked for a group photo. It was like we were in Disney World in front of Cinderella Castle as he handed me a slip with instructions on how to purchase the cherished photo online. (Editors note: we did not purchase the $17 dollar keepsake.)

The outfield wall led us to a cool little nook that made me quite jealous. indians game 008.JPG

Sort of a knock off of Monument Park in Yankee Stadium, its an Indians version of their own storied history. Two platforms of plaques honor the heritage of the Tribe and the history of Cleveland's greatest baseball players. If Pittsburgh had something like this I could live there. Its a great way to honor the franchise and fans of all ages love it.

Walking through the wide lanes of Progressive Field, also something lacking at PNC Park, I notcied this gem on the back of some guys jersey. Thumbnail image for indians game 006.JPG

"Its very bad to steal Jabu's rum! Its very bad."

A classic movie and a classic character. Pedro Cerrano was Clevelands Dominican slugger in the movie "Major League" A must see for baseball fans everywhere and my favorite part of the Cleveland Indians.

To honor another dynamic character from Major League the organization is giving out a "Wild Thing" Rick Vaughn bobblehead towards the end of the year. Fans are lining up for tickets already.

indians game 011.JPG  For the 23,167 in attendance the game was a downer as the Tribe were pounded by the Twins 7-1. No offensive production is bound to kill you, just as it did for the Tribe last night. The pitching of Twins starter Kevin Slowey was brilliant as he went 8 innings only giving up 4 hits and one earned run. Every fan in attedance recieved a Kerry Wood bobblehead upon entrance to the park, so that kept everyone somewhat cherry. The atmosphere and fan enthusiasm was very similair to PNC Park. The cheering level is the same, the attentiveness is the same and the people actually with butts in the seats are the same. The Tribe do have one thing going for them and thats the elite player. Its been Jason Bay for the Pirates in the last few years and now that hes gone its hard for the fan base to pick one player as THEIR guy. Its no secret who THAT guy is for Cleveland.

indians game 013.JPG

I have a feeling that Melissa (the Clemson Girl) will be looking at this photo all night. Grady recieved the most cheers out of any other players. He is the shining star out in centerfield and the shining star in the hearts of teenage girls across the state of Ohio. His eyes may have been scalded by the limelight as he went hitless Saturday night. That scoreboad pic stayed the same the entire night at everyone of his at-bats. Another difference between the Prog and PNC, the variations in the scoreboard pics makes PNC Park unique and keeps the fans innovated. Although, nobody no girl can complain at looking at that sheepish grin.

Although the Tribe fell on Saturday, Cleveland fans have at least one thing going for them.

indians game 010.JPG

They citizens of Cleveland are indeed witnesses. Lebron James is the spectacle of the city. Sorry Grady, Lebron is king of this town. Just look at that gargantuan billboard. Fans from far and wide will tell you Lebron is the resurgance of the city of C-Land.

With the Cavs on the run they are on look out Lakers, Cleveland very well could have quite the easy path to the NBA Finals.

indians game 016.JPG

While here I am thinking Lebron will be the most peculiar thing I see around the stadium, I stand corrected by the Walgreens Foul Pole. Walgreens? On a Foul Paul? Odd in my book but without a doubt a good advertising spot. I can't wait to see a ball flirting with the line but the quickly marked fould becuse of W intereferrence.

Although the city of Cleveland is starving for a relevant sports championship it is still a great sports city. I do not support any on their sports teams. As a Steeler fan it is my duty to dissrespect the Browns. I kinda lose respect for the Indians because of the Steeler fans who aren't Pirates fans. (Hello, there is a baseball team in the city of Pittsburgh) and by default I don't really like the Cavaliers. Lebron's cool and all but I might as well follow suit by not liking any Cleveland professional teams. SInce WVU alum Joe Alexander was drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks, I've been a fan of that team. Its also another excuse to cheer "Lets Go Buc(k)s!"

The Indians give the city something to cheer about where the other teams have failed to do so. (With the exception of Lebron). The recent success in the past 10+ years gives the city great pride.

The Indians will hope to rebound after quite the dismal start. After avoiding the Minnesota sweep on Sunday they're on the right track. Just hope they have these dates circled....

indians game 001.JPG

Cause I surely do. Can't wait to welcome the Tribe to PNC Park for an always thrilling intereleague matchup.

Brian Giles=Bucco Killer

Well it's nearly 2am on a Friday night and just like everybody else on the WVU campus, I'm wide awake. With music blaring out my window and everybody awake and drunk, they're having a good time. Me on the other hand, am quite depressed. I hate when the Pirates lose, I hate when the Pirates lose in extra innings and I really hate when a former Pirate beats the Pirates in extra innings. All three occured tonight. In the bottom of the 12th of the 1th with Chris Burke on second Brian Giles came through with a sharp line drive into right field. It hurt inside. I had passed up a night of debouchery (yes debouchery) to stay on my couch and watch my team. It also hurt because seeing Giles come through in the clutch brought back fond memories.

giles.jpgThe good old days of the 100 loss first season at PNC Park. Giles hit a walkoff homerun against the Astros towards the end of summer. I'll never forget fathers day 2001 when Giles slid across home plate to down the Indians and give the Pirates their first series sweep of the year. Giles was a good player and i'll never forget his batting stance, short stature, power swing and of course the McLouth-esque slicked back blonde hair.

I really do feel we should have won this game. We were right in it but squandered key opportunities. Here are my 3-up, 3-down for tonight's contest.

3 UP

  1. Jason Jaramillo- Great plate discipline and game control. He can definately handle the weight for these next 8-10 Doumit-less weeks
  2. Ian Snell- solid game in a quality start. Looking to finally come around and become the starter we all knew he could be.
  3. Brandon Moss- 1st RBI of the year....bout time bud

3 DOWN

  1. Jack Wilson- 0-5. Pooped, yes pooped out on a bunt, that could have broken the game open.
  2. Nyjer Morgan- while he is leading the NL in stolen bases with 6 he wa spicked off on a key base running incident in the 9th inning.
  3. Matt Capps- gave up the winning run, looked shaky and not his overpowering self.

Well, there's two more game to be played. With DUUUUUUUUKE on the mound tomorrow it'll be interesting to see if his hot streak continues. Gotta get the whole team back on the hot streak more than anything.

2009 PNC Park Scoreboard Art

I've been to my share of major league ballparks. 25 to be exact. Every summer my family goes on a vaction to a big city, theres only one requirement, the city must have a major league team. This summer we are heading to Colorado and Arizona. Knocking two out at the end of July. I will provide more information and details about the trip, and previous trips later. This entry is dedicated to the best ballpark in America, PNC Park. Biased you say? Nah I say. There are many unique details that make PNC Park great. The sights, the comfort, the food, the natural grass, and especially the scoreboard.

Opening Day 2009 016.JPG

While it may not be as large as the new Yankee Stadium and it may not be as unique as the crown in Kansas City, it gets the job done. It's very large and fits the flow of the stadium nicely. Of all the stadium I've been to i also feel that PNC Park provides the best in game entertainment. Of course it is probably a testament to the poor performance on the backs of the team itself. Part of the in game entertainment is the scoreboard displays that preview that batter that is stepping up to plate. PNC Park is one of the few stadiums that variate between innings with different poses, styles and demonstrations. This year features eight different displays for each inning. They're very cool and very popular amongst fans. This years crop of batter messages are among the best I have seen in the nine years of PNC Park existence.

more pirates 001.JPGAs the first inning unfolds so does the best scoreboard art I have ever seen. Each player is presented in a comic book with action poses and an authentic comic book feel. It is very cool appealing to little kids and nerds. Even though I am neither I enjoy it very much.

more pirates 002.JPG

To the untrained eye you may not understand whats going on here. To tell you the truth, the first time I saw it I was wondering what this nonsense was. To start off theres a brief video showing each player dancing around in a room full of floating metallic baloons. Very creepy/trippy. Some players such as Nyjer Morgan pull off matrix moves dodging the balloons while some such as Freddy Sanchez (pictured above) whack the balloons with a bat. After overhearing a middle aged couple discuss this video I learned that it was taken at the Andy Warhol Museam in Pittsburgh. I had an ah-ha moment and gave the front office bonus points for the alluding to a Pittsburgh icon. At the end of teh video the camera zooms in on the player's face with the balloons floating in the background. Cheesy? yes. Weird? maybe Cool? no doubt.

more pirates 003.JPGThat would be Nate McLouth's shining grill in your face. Also another cool batter intro as each player holds a picture frame in front of their face, poses with a funky face 3 times then to put it all together you get the finished product as shown above. Each player has their own style. Some give ridiculous faces that would make a baby cry, while others simply grin or give the same face for each of the 3 photos.

more pirates 010.JPG Another allusion to the city of Pittsburgh as each player poses with their grill featured beside a bridge in the city of Pittsburgh. Not too much elbow grease needed to put into this one but its a great idea. There's nothing I enjoy more than Pirates baseball and Pittsburgh landmarks.

more pirates 005.JPGIf you never been to the Steel City....you're missing out. Not really but still. It is a great city. For those who didn't know it, Pittsburgh is a very artsy city. As the hometown of Mr. Warhol there are many aspiring artists. Why not showcase a striving atrists by allowing their renderings on the jumbotron. Each player is painted on a nice slab of professional paper. Its very cool, especially if I was one of the players seeing a professional drawing of myself. I'd say its a step above from the carictures you can find at your local amusement park.

more pirates 004.JPG

Everyone loves baseball cards. I myself have a very extensive collection. While I don't possess anything to rare or valuable, my father most definately does. Having many of his 1960s era cards still in tact, he admires the classics. During one of the innings as the batters step up to plate a smattering of vintage Pirate baseball cards or shown. Then a current Pirate is shown in the form of a vintage baseball cards. I love the retro feel and my father does as well. Nothing better than bringing back memories of the good old days.

more pirates 020.JPGOnce again taking a page out of the Warhol book. Well not really, but still artistic. You can see that the player's face all distorted and all. Its probably my least favorite. I would assume to find something like this on a rock album cover rather than defining a baseball player.

Sunday vs Braves 008.JPG Finally we have another cool one. Not too flashy but gets the job done. Once again a players face or batting stance is shown with their name in bold print. In the background is another Pittsburgh city scene. Some players have the distinct skyline, others have a drawing of a bridge, and some have a single building in the downtown Pittsburgh. Once again it something I enjoy most. Pirates and Pittsburgh...and everlasting combination.

Well there you have it folks. I'd love to hear feedback. Tell me what you think of the Pittsburgh in-game entertainment crew. I'm also interested to see how it compares to your own hometown team's scoreboard art.

Friday Pick 'em Contest

My boy Jon over at "The "Mc" Effect" has been running a contest every week when you pick the winners of the Friday baseball games. So far Iam in 5th place overall. After a strong second place sprint in the first round I fell a little bit in last weeks contest. Hopefully I can bounce back this week with Ian Snell leading the Pirates to a solid win over the Padres in San Diego. While historically Pittsburgh underachieves on the west coast, with the way our pitchers have been pitching we will ride their backs til the magic runs out.

Pirates over Padres
Reds over Braves
Mets over Nats

A Deeper Look Inside...Matt Capps

capps.jpg"The Mad Capper"

"Big Bull Rider"

Matt Capps could be called which-ever you prefer. The only thing he prefers is a save opportunity. WIth 5 already on the season, Capps is automatic when he's on the mound. The 6'2 245 guy is as big as advertised. Following in the footsteps of heavy set closers, Bob Wickman and Eric Gagne, Capps has a unique style of power when pitching.

Since being on the big league club since 2005 Capps' presecence has always been felt. Totaling 45 saves over the past four years he is among the elite closers in the major league.

The Pirate's organization is no stranger to a strong closer. Number 43 Mike Williams was a fan favorite for many of the beginning years at PNC Park. In '03 Williams set the Pirates record for saves with 43. That mark can easily be surpassed by Capps.

more pirates 011.JPGCapps is no stranger to big league talent. The Douglassville, GA native played on Team Georgia in 2001. The team featured young 20-something ball players that represented their home states in Oklahoma City during the SUn Belt classic. Brian McCann and Jeff Francour joined Capps on the team.

Capps, a bachelor and only 25 years old has been on his fair share of wedding parties. He was best man to fellow pitcher Zach Duke. The comraderie on any team is great and will provide for great chemistry and success in any situation. It's great having a duo like this on our team.

Capps is not tenth on the all time saves list for a Pirate. WIth many outstanding years ahead of him, he should have no problem making a name for himself in the Pittsburgh organization

WELCOME TO "MORGAN"-TOWN

Another great night a PNC Park....

RAISE THE JOLLY ROGER...8-6 JollyRoger.jpg

It was another tiny crowd, in fact my brother's soccer game drew more people. The announced paid attendance of over 9,000 was so inaccurate. I'd say abou 3,000 people actually came through the gates last night. WIth the Pens game going on at the exact same time, and the weather conditions less than ideal there are some valid excuses for not turning out. But come on, ITS A MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL GAME!. The Pirates are playing great baseball. Freddy Sanchez is on a tear, briging his average up to .367, it looks like we're getting back the Freddy of old. His 3 hits last night, including a solo homerun paced the Bucs and ultimately concluded the game with the 3-2 win over the best team in baseball, the Florida Marlins.

Our starting pitching was on the ball once again. Jeff Karstens had a quality start going 6 innings only allowing 3 hits and one run. OUr bullpen was shaky however. Tyler Yates came in and gave up a home run to Cameron Maybin. It was a deep shot into the second deck of the bleachers in left field, right over my head. In fact it was the first home run hit into "MORGANTOWN". In honor of left fielder Nyjer Morgan me and my buddies made a sign that simply said Morgantown. We hung it over the railing in left field, chanted "Nyjer Morgan" (like the bleacher creatures in Yankee Stadium), and "Welcome to Morgantown". He got a big kick out of it, and threw us ball he was warming up with. The people around us enjoyed it too chanting right along with us. Its also kind of punnny becuase as students of WVU we're resients of Morgantown, WV. Just another catchy reason to do it in the first place. The sign is good in Pittsburgh as well as on campus in Morgantown. Look for "Morgantown" at many games throught this season, the city is always growing and can use more residents too!

WELLS WATCH

Kip saw his first action in the major leagues this year on Monday. The now reliever for the Nationals threw one full inning only walking one batter. He shut down the next three in order. While he was only out there for an inning the Nats picked up the win 3-2 over the Braves

Splash Zone

RAISE THE JOLLY ROGER...7-6

jolly-roger.gif I'm baffled. Being a Pirate fan is one of the most confusing loyalties I can think of. One night, we're shut out. We look like we couldn't even get a hit off a 12 year old, the next night we torch the opposition with 11 hits and 8 runs, exactly what we did on Monday.

With every position player in the starting lineup getting a hit, the rally was on going all game. With Craig Monroe seeing starting action in right field and Jason Jaramillo playing behind the plate, two reserves got great experience and were a major part of the blowout win.

Monroe was 1-4 while scoring a run and Jaramillo was 2-4 scoring a run of his own.

nate2.jpgAs always, fireworks were let off after the Bucco win, however the offensive fireworks came in the 6th inning. Nate McLouth jacked a homerun over the right field wall, out of the park. The ball bounced off the riverwalk and SPLASH into the Alegheny. It was only the 24th ball to land in the water in the history of PNC Park.

While the offense provided the headlines, Ross Ohlendorf led the sidebar.
Going 7 innings only allowing 2 hits, the quality start for Ohlendorf was a real confidence booster and showed how commanding he can actually be. Its not everyday you completely shut down the MLB's best team. The Pirates handed the Marlins just their second loss of teh season, by doing so the Bucs flat out embarrased the Fish. 2 hits through the course of the game, allowed the Pirates to exploit the over rated Florid team.

However, the real embarrasment came in the stands. An announced attendance of just over 8,000 made PNC Park look like an empty abyss. The crowd looked even smaller than the announced attendance. With all the deal offered by the organization and the team actually playing good, its amazing that more people don't come out to support the Bucs. As a college student I try to do my share. I've been to three home games already on the young season. Obviously, I can't make every game, and neither can the entire population of the Burgh metropolitan area. But at lease show an effort people. You make the city look bad when you don't show up! I guess the game could technically be seen as a sellout, if blue plastic seats took over the world! The game was even seen live on ESPN for a brief moment for a live look in. Across the country baseball fans and sports fans in general saw first hand our lackluster fan support. Looks like we may need to borrow the jolly roger's eye patch to cover up the black eye our team, stadium, organization, franchise and city just recieved.

Kip Wells Watch

kip wells.jpgKip Wells...man where do I start. Back in the 2001 off season I remember being so pumped that the Pirates recieved him in a trade that sent Todd Ritchie to the White Sox. As an avid baseball card collecter I remember reading Beckett Baseball Card monthly and studying hot prospects whose cards would soon be worth big bucks. Wells was listed in the hot top 25 and nonetheless I had one of his minor league cards. Becoming a Pirate would be a great way for me to watch this up and comer and support him playing for my team.

I got my card autographed at the Pirates Caravan that came to my former hometown of Youngstown, OH. I was very excited, the complete opposite of Wells's reaction. He kept to himself and never really had a smile on his face. I would soon relaize me and this guy would never have a good relationship.

His sour attitude upon his shortcoming as a bucco made me despise him everytime he took the mound. What sent me over the edge was when I attended a game in Cincinatti there was a sparce gathering of Pirate fans along the infield fence during batting practice. I had a ball out ready for autographs for whoever walked by. Kip comes over, everybody yelling his name and cheering in support, but what does he do? Snubs the crowd without acknowldgement or any sense of care. My mother, who is not the biggest Pirate fan, or baseball fan for that matter, was very taken aback by his gesture and developed the same harsh feelings for Kip.

Since his departure from the Pirates in 2006 he has been a drifter, playing for the Rangers, kip.jpg Cardinals, Rockies, Royals and most recently the Nationals.

The reason for this rant is that I saw his anme mentioned on Sportscenter tonight, he has been promoted to the Nationals big league club where he will pitch out of the bullpen. I found it amusing that a kid with such great promise has turned into what Kip Wells has turned into. Pretty much just a forgotten big leaguer with no future, sorry for the negative sentiments. His stats has been dismal these past three years and this very well could be his last hurrah in the major leagues. I look forward to keeping track of his Nats tenure. If he succeeds---all the best. If he fails----I hate to say, I told ya so.

It was a great time BEFORE and AFTER the game...

I've rarely been to a game before the gates open. Today proved that I should do it more often. Not only did I only pay 4 dollars for my bleacher seat, I also caught a ball, won a plate and ate at Jerome Bettis's Bar and Grill. It was Giant Eagle Advantage card day at the park, good for 5 dollars off any seat in the stadium.

It was really a great day. Except, the Pirates fell to the Braves 11-1. By fell I mean the Pirates were destroyed by the Braves 11-1. Zach Duke was letting batters drill him all day long. It was a complete 180 from his 4 hit complete game shut out.

I dont get whats up with the offense on days like this. Some games we get more production than we can ask for and then today comes along and we can barely get on base. We make decent pitchers (Chris Carpenter, Mike Hampton and today Javier Vazquez) look like gems on the mound. Sometimes it gets embarrasing.

Thats me with the ball I got in batiing practce. Brought my glove this time and was able to snag one thrown into the crowd. Pirates relief pitcher Donnie Veal threw it up.

Sunday vs Braves 012.JPG Today was also the debut of my new Pirate windbreaker jacket., I feel classy in it, plus its very nice on a windy, rainy 50 degree day liek today. Im pumped to wear it to another game and aroudn town. It also has the feel as a nice golf jacket.

After the game my and my group mosied on over to Jerom Bettis Grill 36. A new restraunt in between PNC Park and Heinz Field. Let me tell you it is a beautiful restraunt. It has a great atmosphere and is a great shrine to Pittsburgh's beloved bus. The food is great and the prices are resonable. I was able to catch some of the Pens game and it was nuts when they scored teir first two goals. It is a great sports bar that I will frequent often and recomend to everybody that plans on visiting Pittsburgh.

Monroe gets curtain call in Buc Blowout

Opening Day 2009 045.JPGRAISE THE JOLLY ROGER...6-5

It was another beautiful day at PNC Park. My second game of the year and every second of it was fantastic. Adorning my Ian Snell jersey with a purpose, as he took the mound for his third start of the season. Surprising enough Snell was very effective. Seven scoreless innings, three strikeouts and only four hits was his stat line in the afternoon contest. While Snell was anything but commanding he got the job done. Giving hitters favorable counts and throwing many pitches in the dirt you could tell there is still work to be done. However, Snell did everything anybody could ask for. He got pitchers to pop out or groundout and shut down the heart of the Braves lineup.

One lineup that was not shut down was that of the Pirates.

Pirates-Braves 017.JPGLook the poise in that man's eyes. Monroe jacked two bombs right to the heart of center field, 3-run shots to be exact. Without a doubt Monroe is the biggest power asset on the team. With 16 RBI and 6 homers in spring training, Monroe led the club. I said this man was going to be a threat and needed to get in the lineup. If you don't believe me go back some pages and check for yourself. Monroe has a sweet swing and connects on good pitches. All he needs is an opportunity.

What concerns me the most is our outfield situation. Make no mistake about it our outfield is great. We have good players who are blossoming (Moss), vets who are solid (McLouth-spelled it right didnt I Jon? and Hinske), guys with something to prove (Morgan and Monroe) and a wildcard who is supposed to be the real deal (Young.) It's crowded out there. I'm concerned that every player won't get their fair share and playing time will be limitied for all. While I do believe competition brings out the best in people, it may not be the best idea for the Pirates. We need to have an everyday lineup set in stone. Im not a big fan of the platoon system. It could work for righty-left matchups but other than that I think it sets up for turmoil in the clubhouse.

A 10-0 Pirate win capped off a great day. My good friend Andrew Schuerholz is a Braves fan and it was great to rub it in his face. If the name Schuerholz sounds familiar chances are it is. Andrew is the nephew of Braves VP and former general manager John Schuerholz. Uncle John hooked us up with great seats. Row D right behind home plate. It was cool sitting amongst the hot shots of the MLB. We were right behind a group of scouts from various major league teams. The Marlins, Brewers, Rockies, Dodgers and Blue Jays were all represented in two rows of seats. By witnessing the way the follow and critique the game I came to the conclusion that I want to be a baseball scout. Pirates-Braves 014.JPG

Each of the scouts had notebooks such as this one. It was a collection of the most extensive baseball data I have ever seen. Each player was evaluated down to the finest detail. Location of pitches, how batters looked at pitches and time between action was all taken down into account. It was amazing how these guys followed the game and knew how the players would do in certain situations. It's a cool job and something I would love to have more information on.

Once again it was another great day at the best ballpark in America. The sun drenched cty of Pittsburgh looked fabulous as always and added memorable moments I wont soon forget.

A Deeper Look Inside...Chris Kiernan

chris.jpgMeet Chris Kiernan, a sophomore sport management mager at West Virginia University. He is from a desolate town in terms of baseball fans; Forked River, New Jersey. A football fan first, Kiernan is growing his legs in terms of baseball fandom. He has been a Tampa Bay Rays fan for the past 5 years, the long run for the Rays in last years playoffs really heightened his interest in the game.

opening day.jpg Going to his first game at PNC Park and only a handful of games in his lifetime, Kiernan eagerly anticipated Monday's Opening Day.

"I was excited for my first trip to PNC Park and even more excited that the tickets were only 12 dollars," Kiernan said, " It's the best value in the amjor leagues."

A loyal follower of the minor league teams in his Garden State home, Kiernan felt special that the price of tickets are so affordable.

"I can go to a major league game cheaper than I can go to a minor league game."

While that is surely no low blow at the gameplay of the Pittsburgh ball club as Kiernan enjoyed his time at the most beautiful park in baseball from start to finish.

"Batting practice was cool because I got to talk to a player on my fantasy team (Carlos Lee). lee.jpg How close you got to the players, everyone around you trying to catch home run balls. My friend, Matt (Me) trying to catch one and missing. It was very funny."

The pregame festivities also was a treat for Kiernan. "Honestly, my favorite part of the day was when Nate McClouth recieved his Gold Glove."

The next moment, while memorable for Kiernan was a moment McClouth will soon hope to forget. "Then he missed his first fly ball which I thought was ironic."

Monday, being his first trip to the Steel City, Kiernan wanted to take in the whole city. As Pittsburghers we know theres no better way to present our fair city than to start with the food.

primanti.jpg "I always enjoy myself from the food standpoint of things," he said after chowing down on his Primanti cheesesteak, ballpark hot dogs and a burger from Red Robin. "The primanti brothers sandwich was a good experience. Once you take half the slaw off, it's an excellent sandwhich.

While this was his first game in Pittsburgh, Kiernan has attened a handful of major league games. After all is said and done he said the Pirates game ranked in his top three. Opening Day 2006 in Tampa was a favorite, as well as a game last season in Baltimore.

"When I was in the upper deck at Camden Yards was sweet," he said. "My freind Matt Peaslee (Me again) made a nice play on the beach ball that was floating around. He kept it away from teh security guard. It was amusing."

While Kiernan walked into the game as a neutral fan, he came out with a greater respect and knowledge of the Pirates.

"I enjoyed the hometown fans cheering on their beloved Buccos."

He also found his fair share of critiques for the club. "The Pirate need a better bullpen. Matt Capps is a great closer but from the starters and relievers the dropoff is big. The relievers are abysmal."

With many games ahead as the season is still young Kiernan anticpates his next visit to PNC Park. "I definately plan on wearing my free hat."

BREAKING NEWS: Pirates acquire OF Delwyn Young

In quite the head scraching move the Pirates have traded for Dodger's outfielder Delwyn Young. The Pirates will either ship two players to be named later or cash to LA.

Now I have no problem with this. I've heard of the guy and hear he has a load of upside. He is 26 years old and will just be reaching the prime of his career.

  young.jpg

"DY" as he was affectionately called in Las Angeles tore up the minor league circuit. In 2004 he hit 22 homers and batted .281. He made his major league debut in 2006 and has since struggled. His career BA is just .261 and his power numbers have slipped with just three home runs.

The Pittsburgh outfield is already crowded as it is. With Morgan going bonkers at the plate, McClouth solidifed in solid and the front office banking on Moss to contribute there really isn't room for Young.

On the bench we have Hinske and Monroe who are good players and not getting the playing time they deserve as it is. In the minors we have Cutch and Tabata. The only logical explanation for this is that we will use one of them as more tade bait. He need pitching, all wee can get. More than likely Monroe or Hinske will be outta here first, maybe even Morgan. Morgan is the most attractive of the three because of his hot start. I can even see Adam LaRoche being traded. Moss or Hinkse can fill in at first and even Steve Pearce once he gets the call up.

It'll be interesting to see how it unfolds and impacts the club....

DUUUUUUUUUUKE

DSCN0955.JPG

4-3...

A chilly day and nosebleed seats did not stop me from enjoying a fantastic day at PNC Park, the first time in '09. The Pirates were not fazed by the elements either as they shalacked the Astros 7-0. Zach Duke's complete game, 4 hit shutout in fron of 38,000 plus fans was truly a sight to behold.

These bulleted points will outline my day in Pittsburgh and at the most beautiful park in the MLB.

  • Woke up at 8 and was on the road by 9, hour trip up 1-79 and right into the heart of downtown Pittsburgh
  • The first stop was in the strip district for a good taste of the 'Burgh Primanti Brothers. As always nothing tastes better than slaw, tomatoes, cheese, fries and the meat of your choice in between two slices of delectable italian bread. My friends in my group were virgins to the delicacy and enjoyed every morsal of their breakfast.
  • It's not every day I get to take in the ambiance of the markets and shops of the Strip so we took in some time along Smallman Street. We stopped in many nooks of the authentic Pittsburgh stores. I enjoyed the custom t-shirts that were for sale but I'm not the biggest Penguins fan and there was enough Pens shirts to clothe the country of Thailand.
  • After getting back to the car we drove a few feet to the David L. Lawrence convention center where we parked.
  • We found a spot and made the trek across the river to the field of green. It was the first time I had ever walked across the Clemente Bridge. It really wasn't a long walk and the weather was very nice.
  • Upon entrance to the stadium I was prepared to recieve a magnetic schedule and and a brief hello from the ticket takers. I was pleasantly surprised when I recieved not only a magnetic schedule, not only a friendly hello, but also a commemorative opening day cap. While I will never wear that hat, or any free give away hat, it is definately a nice momento on an occasion I will not soon forget.
  • As we were already in left field we headed to the left field bleachers for batting practice. We met up with my father and little brother along the left field fence and tried our best to snag some BP balls. As a high fly ball headed right over my head, I boxed out those around me and reached to the sky with my bare hands. BAD IDEA not only did my concrete hands deflect the ball, my hands stung for at least two hours. (Note to self: BRING A STINKING GLOVE)
  • After the Astro's had the equipment packed up we checked out the team store for new merchandise. Going against my plan of buying a Doumit t-shirt ($27 dollars...come on) I purchased a Nate McClouth All Star T-shirt ($12 dollars...much more reasonable dontcha think)
  • We headed to our seats up in section 302...very last row. Right along the river, it gets cold. The westerdly winds were blowing all game long and never ceased. We were icicles by the ninth inning. My brother and dad who were on the other side of the field said they were actually hot. Unfathomable for me and my friends to believe.
  • While the weather was less than ideal the game surely did not dissapoint. 3 triples by Freddy Sanchez, a homerun by Adam LaRoche in April, another dinger compliments of Ryan Doumit and unhittable pitches by Zach Duke. Everything seemed to come together for the Bucs on the fireld.
  • Every Pirate in the starting lineup notched a hit and the Pirates even batted around in the 4th inning.
  • After raising the Jolly Roger and exiting the park I high fived the saxophone guy and requested country roads. Which he played, but also dissed my Ian Snell jersey.
  • I surely underestimated the downtown Pittsburgh traffic after the game and after work for downtown business. While sitting in the stand still traffic i called into 104.7 and proposed to Rocco Demiro an 85 win season for the Pirates. He was very taken aback by the overly optomistic proposition, but after my explanation of our outstanding pitching staff and potent hitting we can definately pull it off.

Opening Day; just hours away

You ever see those Disney World commercials where the kids are restless in their beds?

The little boy and his sister run into their parents room because their too exited to sleep becuase they leave for Disney World the next day.

I'm feeling the same exact way!

I'm waking up in a mere 7 hours to prep for the hour trip from my apartment in Morgantown, WV up 1-79 into the Steel City.

I should be resting up so I will be bright eyed a bushy tailed ealry in the morning but I just can't make myself fall aslepp. With Sportscenter echoing on my 13in tv and Youtube clips of Pirate highlights from years past I'm only encouraging myself not to go to bed.

With seats in section 302, row Y I pretty much have the worst seats in the house, then again, it's PNC Park; Greatest park in the nation.

Look at this picture and tell me otherwise.....

pnc_park_view.jpg

Ahhhhh, just take it all in. Breath taking isn't it?

No other stadium in America (or even Canada) can offer that view. The picturesque backdrop of the city and small confines add up to an unforgettable baseball experience.

My friends who are going to the game with me aren't necessarily the biggest Pirate fans. In fact they are Rays, Orioles and Indians fans respectively. They will enjoy the game. Due to the fact its a real baseball game played in the National League, they will be able to feast their eyes on a great ballpark experience in a beautiful spring day.

Hopefully the atmosphere and fanfare of opening day will add up to a thrilling Bucco win. If not, there are plenty of other games to be held. However, there is nothing like the optomism of an opening day win to brighten your spirits for the rest of the season.

Instead of seeing Mickey, Goofy and Donald I will be seeing Nate, Zach and Nyjer. It will be a great day and all festivities will be recorded and posted to the PittPeas later in the day. Stay tuned for pictures, videos and comments from opening day in Pittsburgh.

Offense boosts Pirates to a 10-2 dominating victory

jolly-roger.gif

RAISE THE JOLLY ROGER...3-2

Scrappy, hard-nosed, intrepid---> three words you would used for a football player, James Harrison or Ben Roethisberger perhaps. On Saturday those three adjectives switched sports and fit a baseball player to a T. Nyjer Morgan continued his streak of contingency by going 3-4. Morgan notched a triple and a pair singles while stealing two bases. Perfect fantasy numbers for you gurus out there. Those numbers were quite frankly outstanding and good enough for a 10-2 Pirate win over the Cincinatti Reds. .

The bats of the whole lineup were out in full force. Nate McClouth went 2-3 with 3 RBI and went deep in the top of the first with a 2-run homer, his second of the year.

nate.jpgThe big sticks hammered Cinci reliever Mike Lincoln in the top of the ninth innings. Ryan Doumit went deep for a grand slam and Adam LaRoche follwed suit with a solo shot of his own.

Without the ingenious play of Morgan on the base paths the grand slam would have been an after thought. Morgan used a hard slide into second base to break up a would be double play. Earlier in the game the instincts of Morgan shone once again as he topple over Cinci catcher Ramon Hernandez breaking up what could have been a close play at the plate.

I've priased Morgan for his opening series heroics but he proved today that hard play will be the norm for our starting left fielder. It's great to see him giving his all out there and enjoying playing the game.

With all the praise for the offense it should go without saying that the starting pitching really gave the Pirate's the upper hand. Paul Maholm was sharp, just as he was in his opening day appearance. The Mississippi native went seven innings only allowing three hits. Nasty stuff was thrown from his arm all day and his control was spot on, only walking three batters.

On Easter Sunday the Bucs will battle the Reds agin for the final game of teh rain shortened series. Only 2 days 'til the PNC Park home opener. So Pumped and ready to take in the game at the most beautiful park in all of baseball.

17 Hits one day...1 the next

It's no question Chris Carpenter is back. Earning his first win since late 2006 Carpenter came out and dismissed the Pirates like they were a little league team.

chris_carpenter.jpg

Carpenter went 7 innings only allowing one hit which also came in the seventh inning. The former CY Young winner struck out seven Bucco batters.

Freddy Sanchez, who has been the hottest Pirates at the plate and leads the team with a .444 BA said plain and simply that Carpenter was "filthy"

Crapenter's superb outing overshadowed Pirate starter Ross Ohlendorf's solid outing. Ohlendorf went six innings allowing two earne druns on six hits. He was surely effective, but just fell apart in the 6th inning due to shaky defense from Sanchez at 2nd.

If Pirate starters can continue to remain effective like Ohlendorf was today, there should be no problem wiining ball games. Holding a team, especially the Cardinals, to two runs is no easy feat and the Pirates should not feel too bad about this loss. I'm not one to hang my head for moral victories and the Pirates should feel the same. As a major league ball club runs should be put on the board and one hit is something that should never happen again. The offense is surely not what it was last year with Bay and Nady, but with the seasoned vets we have in the lineup, everybody should be a threat.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well now that one series is in the books let's look back at the GOOD the BAD and the UGLY from the first 4 games.

THE GOOD: NYJER MORGAN

nyjer.jpg

There's nothing better than silencing your critics. Morgan has had his share of haters throughout his entire career and rightfully so, he had big shoes to fill. It's never easy to step into the starting role of a major league left fielder. More so, it's hard to replace a perenial All-Star. After the departure of Jason Bay the Pirates needed someone to step in and act as a Bay. While Morgna lacks the pop of Bay he provides a spark at the top of the lineup and speed in the field. After a Sportscenter top 10 play from Thursday's game and a .316 batting avergae for the first four games Morgan is proving his worth and shushing the critics. HE BELONGS HERE.

THE BAD: IAN SNELL

067-Snell.JPG

Out to prove last season's dismal performances were a fluke, Snell got off to a horrendous start. After Maholm's 6 inning one earned run outing on opening day Snell came out the next day and fell flat. Snell only made it through 4 innings after being thrown to the showers. Number 45 gave up six earned runs and Cardinal batters abused him for 9 hits. Not only did Snell's era skyrocketed to 13 after just one start he also had trouble finsing the strike zone. He only walked 3 batters but gave the hitters favorable counts to work with. Now the Cardinals have a history of toying with Snell . Pujols took him deep as well Chris Duncan. He was rocked to all parts of the field and had no command at all. Snell pitched in the World baseball classic and did somehwhat fine. He didn't pick up any wins and only allowed a few runs in the big games he pitched. A shortened spring training could be a valuable excuse for Snell. However, with the rest of the rotation doing well Snell will have to step up for his own sake.

THE UGLY: DEFENSE

ANDY.jpg

Ugly is a very generous term for the play of the Pirate denefense. Apalling, Grotesque, Hideous and Putrid also come to mind. Missed pop flys, bases over thrown, bassed balls. O MY. 3 erros in 2 game for Andy LaRoche,  overthrows by Sanchez and John Grabow and inexcusable passed balls and a freaking catcher's interference call by catch Ryan Doumit. Even Nyjer Morgan, who has been very crisp in teh field has over run some balls and misjusdged teh flight path of fly balls. It's very dementing for a fan to see the sloppy play by these guys. I can only imagine how manager John Russell and even the pitcher's feel when routine plays are bothced. It's very shameful.

Heading down the Ohio River, Pittsburgh will take on the Cincinatti Reds for a three game series over the weekend.

Duke is royal in Bucco win

RAISE THE JOLLY ROGER...2-1

Tonight's game was a spectacle all Pirate fans enjoyed from start to finish. Teh offense came together and the Pitching was spot on. It was a great night to watch my team win a key game against a division rival.

Nyjer Morgan continued his hot streak going 2-6 with an RBI and run scored. It was also great to see Doumit and McClouth get on the hit board. Nate's 6th inning solo dinger gave him his first hit of the young season and the second home run hit by a Bucco this season. Ryan collected two hits, a double and a single. However, his blunders in the field were somewhat costly and proved that mechanics are downgraded in our catcher. His catcher interference call was something that I have never seen and something that should be corrected in little league.   Also, he was picked off when rounding first on his single. He should have just stayed on the base, he had no business taking second and paid for his bonehead move.

Zach Duke was fabulous in 6.1 innings of work with only one earned run on five hits. Duke didn't overpower hitters, but fooled them with off-speed pitches. He also struck out four batters including slugger Albert Pujols. It was great to see the reign continue for Zach, something we haven't witnessed in over two years.

Tomorrow's game will close out the St. Louis series and Ross Ohlendorf will take the mound for his 2009 debut.

card fan.jpg
After enduring sub 40 degree temperatures and blustery winds this Cardinals fan expected a St. Louis win. Well, unfortunately for him (but fortunately us us Pittsburghers) the Pirates spoiled the wishes of the 40,000 plus fans in attendance with a 6-4 victory.

pirates.jpg

Eric Hinske, Adam LaRoche and Brandon Moss score the 4th, 5th and 6th runs of the ballgame. Jack Wilson's double brought in all three Bucco runs.

AND THERE WAS NOOOOOO DOUBT ABOUT IT

Jason Motte.......NOT!

jr.png

RAISE THE JOLLY ROGER...1-0

Breath it in folks...our Buccos are 1-0. A thrilling come from behind victory in the top of the ninth gave Pittsburgh a 6-4 'W' over the Cards. Everyones favorite shortstop Jack Wilson comes through in rockstar fashion.

jack win.jpg
The big top of the ninth came off rookie closer Jason Motte. Motte has been scouted as a future All-Star with a high heater that has once reached 100mph. In his first opportunity to prove his weight Motte not only blew a save but took a loss. His era has sky rocketed to 36.00 after giving up 4 runs on four hits.

On the Pirates side of things, without Paul Maholm the Buccos would not have one this game. Maholm went 6.2 innings with one eraned run on seven hits. The staff ace pitched very well on the mound in chilly, windy conditions. Maholm also came through at the plate. The Mississippi native was 1-1 with a bloop single while drawing three walks. Just getting used to his success at the plate, Paul could use some tips on the base paths. In an attempt to score from third he was caught in a pickle and tagged out. Had he not have disobeyed 3rd base coach Tony Beasley's stop sign the Pirates could have put the game away early in the 6th inning.

paul.jpg

It was a nerve racking game when Tyler Yates was handed the reigns from the bullpen. I've been skeptical of our bullpen since spring tarining and Yates only heightened my negative feelings. The 2 year vet gave up two runs, one of which was a solo homerun by Ryan Ludwick. However, the 'Mad Capper' went out for the save and the 'Big Bull Rider' himself notched it.

The game today made me proud to be a favorite Pirate fan. It's great to rub it in my buddies faces for always putting me down because I'm a 'Burgher. A lot of good came from today. Also, a hint of bad. Stay tuned after Wednesday's game when The Peas will analyze the first series. Until then, it is a great night to be a Pirate fan wherever you may be.

The one thing missing in this lineup is definitely the power. It will also be interesting to see how many of these penciled in starters will still have their jobs in tact come September. Morgan, Moss and An. LaRoche are the biggest liabilities at their respective positions. With top notch prospects and a solid bench knocking down the door, competition will be prevalent throughout the season. "Only the strong survive" Who will be the strong for the Buccos this season?

A Deeper Look Inside.....RYAN DOUMIT

doumit.jpgMr. Doumit has really broken onto the scene in the off-season. With the starting job in hand Doumit has had a solid spring and has even acted as a mentor to the younger backstops in the organiztion. A lot of weight is on this guys shoulders. He is expected to produce and be a solid core for the future of this team. His contract and bobble head night prove what the front office expects and I'm sure the Moses Lake, Washington native will not dissapoint.

While Ryan is recieving a lot of honor and respect from the Pittsburgh are he is alos catching fire nationwide. Many baseball publications list him in the top five of fantasy catchers. A solid pick as he definately has th enumbers to back up his praises. Last season, Doumit batted a solid .318 in his first semi full season. In 116 games he had a batting average of .318, leading all National League catchers and drove in 69 RBI. His 15 home runs also provided ample power out of the catching position.

doumit 2.jpg  With as many accolades as this guy has recieved, he also holds down his share of drawbacks.

Plain and simple he is a liability. He is injury prone and kind of soft behind the plate. He suffered a broken thumb last season missing some crucial games for the Pirates. He would have contended for the batting title had he been healthy through the course of the whole season.

Ryan has also earned himself a catchy nickname. "No Mit-Doumit" is a name that has floated around PNC Park since Doumit was first toutued as a top prospect in the organization. He does need to work on his defense behind the plate, but what catcher doesn't. It is the hardest position to play in baseball and even the greats like Johnny Bench and Mike Piazza were never known for their defensive brilliance.

Ryan can also improve on the way he handles the pitchers. While he is a persoanble guy and known to be the clubhouse clown his game management skills can use a minor fine tuning. When Ronny Paulino was here it seemed that he could connect to the pitchers and call a good game behind the plate. Doumit needs to follow in Paulino's footsteps and settle down our pitchers because by God they will need all the confidence they can get.

Doumit is no longer a prospect as he is enetring into his prime. As a 28 year old Doumit has a lot of weight placed atop his shoulders. He needs to prove he can stay healthy and put in a great offensive and defensive performance night in and night out (or a lot of fantasy managers will claim he is the biggest bust in history). I have confidence in the guy, just as I have confidence in this whole team.

doumit bat.jpg  Doumit also has to be able to handle the role of being a fan favorite. Jack Wilson knows how to handle it as he has been here for his entire career and has been used to the limelight. Upon signing his new contract Doumit is going to have to be the funny, personable guy throughout the course of his career.

Doumit is even garnering fans from outside the Pittsburgh community. One of my roommates Jared, is a die hard Indians fan but is the biggest Doumit supporter I know. Since his "Inside Pirates Baseball" appearance as a mere rookie Jared identified with Ryan's free spirit and carefree attitude.

My other friend Andrew drafted Doumit in our fantasy laegaue. Andrew is an Orioles fan but chose Doumit as the first catcher picked. He is ready for Doumit to "tear it up."

As the Pirate fan I am also ready for Ryan to tear it up. As a top 10 prospect a few years ago I have been waiting for Ryan to give a full season in the 'Burgh. I'm confident he will blossom into the full player we have all hoped he could be. 2009 is his year to prove the Ryan Time begins now.

Gettin my baseball fix a week early

Tuesday March 31,st was a beautiful day in Morgantown, West Virginia. 65 degress with the sun shining; not a clous in the sky.

Walking around the quaint campus of WVU was very pleasant as everyone was in their shorts and shades taking in a perfect outdoors day.

Now personally I am waiting on pins and needle for opening day next week. Although the Bucs open up on the road I am still pumped to turn to FSN Pittsburgh at 4:00 pm for the first game of the season. But with such a beautiful day out there I needed some live baseball.

At 4 o'clock yesterday the WVU baseball team was in action against Duquesne. The Dukes made the trip down I-79 in a scaled dow version of the "backyard brawl" it was a great game.

As the baseball beat writer for the WVU student newspaper "Daily Athenaeum" I had to be in attendance, taking notes on the game and getting post game interviews with the players. I really don't even consider it a job because it is just an amzaing feeling to be around my favorite sport, especially on such a beautiful day.

So me and a few buddies sat in the uncomfortable metal bleachers, chewing and spitting sunflower seeds watching some Division one NCAA baseball.

My media privelages allow me to sit in the press box but I chose to sit out amongst the fans and enjoy the old fashioned baseball game.

As part of my old fashioned as chose to keep score.

replay_2.jpgRemember this? It's a lost art of the game. It's very fun and allows you to pay attention to the game with great interest. Some of my friends don't understand the game of baseball and claim that its just too boring. Keeping score gives you a better appreciation of the game. It's cool to see what the players have done throughout the course of the game. It allows the casual fan of the game to become a scout in their own right.

But back to the WVU game. The Mountaineers took the game 7-5. It was a lot closer than it needed to be. Costly errors by West Virginia in fifth inning allowed the Dukes to score three runs.

West Virginia has opened a lot of eyes this season. The Mountaineers earned their 19th win on Tuesday and sit atop the Big East Conference standings with a league record of 5-1.

Enourato33109.jpg Chris Enourato, pictured on the left, is the team's closer and is automatic in save situations. Enourato faced six Duquesne batters and struck out four in yesterdays game. He holds the WVU record for career saves with 15 and he will keep adding on to that total as the season progresses.

Enourato is just a junior but has a legitimate shot at making a big league draft spot.

gyorko-jedd.jpg

Shortstop Jedd Gyorko is a natural hitter with a smooth swing. He has been a sprkplug for the Mountaineers all season. On Tuesday he went 0-4 with two strikeouts. Every player has an off day and Gyorko will look to shake off the funk in today's game against Ohio University.

Today (Wednesday) has been a polar opposite from yesterday. It's still warm but the storm clouds have moved in over the University city. The tarp is out on the field but it is unlikely the Mountaineers will play in their game schduled for 5pm.

The Mountaineers are on pace for a very exciting second half of the season. They'll be fighting for the Big East Championship and the right to earn a spot in the College World Series in Omaha.

With all the talk of the Mountaineers its easy to forget that the big day is just 5 days away.
